"The main function of PSI is to be in the global arena. PSI represents us all at meetings in the UN, IMF, the World Bank and OECD. PSI has to secure everything is going the right way when international trade agreements are being signed and to watch the steps of multinational companies."

"Acting at the global level for a financial transaction tax is more than important but we must act at national and regional levels too.

A financial transaction tax could provide revenue for quality public services and participate in the economic and social development of developing countries."

Photo by Jesse Morgan"It is time to stop talking. It is time to go back to our countries to work on what we have assigned to," says Rosa Pavanelli, PSI's new General Secretary at the closing of the World Congress in Durban.

Then Zulu dancers, Indian Tectonic Dancers and a Marimba band took over the stage, dancing and singing 1200 delegates from all over the world out of the International Convention Centre in Durban and off to their flights home.

Hiroaki Aragane, vice president of JICHIRO received the 2012 PSI Public Service Trade Union award in a ceremony at PSI's world congress.

JICHIRO showed remarkable leadership, courage and commitment in coming to the aid of citizens following the earthquake, the tsunami and nuclear disaster of March 11, 2011.  The members of JICHIRO, through their continuing work throughout the world, have shown the key role that public services play in times of disaster.

Dave Prentis' re-election as PSI President, on the last day of the world congress,  was greeted by long and warm applause.

"It’s a great honour to be elected President of such a tremendous organisation. We have a lot of work ahead of us. We stand up for what we believe in, dignity and respect for all people. If we do not stand up – nobody will!

We were created for hard times- I’m sure that the people in this room will ensure that we succeed. Thank you everybody for your contribution. Together we’ll move forward!"
